U18AAA Win Big At The Big Nickel
Congratulations to our U18 AAA team who brought home gold at the 45th Sudbury Big Nickel Tournament this past weekend.
The 34 team tournament tournament, which saw 9 of the top 10 provincially ranked teams participate, is widely regarding as the premier tournament for the U18 AAA age group.
The Raiders went 4-0 in the round robin including wins against the Soo Jr. Greyhounds, the 1st place team in the Great North U18 AAA League, as well as the GTHL 1st place Toronto Young Nationals. The Raiders then had a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against the #7 provincially ranked Elgin Middlesex Canucks, followed by a 5-0 win in the semi-final against league rival Peterborough Petes. The championship game would be against another familiar opponent, the North Shore Whitecaps.
Jax Conklin opened the scoring in the first 5 minutes to give the Raiders the early lead, which then saw a back and forth high paced game with both teams trading opportunities, until Cooper Bonnyman finally found the back of the net with 4 minutes to go in the game, giving the Raiders a 2-0 lead which would be enough to win the championship.
This is the first Big Nickel Championship for the Raiders organization. Congratulations to all the players and staff.
