HEAD COACH - WES SANDS

I am a parent coach dedicated to helping players develop both on and off the ice. My coaching journey began in 2016 when my oldest son started in House League Initiation and since then I have coached all 3 of my sons age groups as an Assistant Coach, spanning 20 teams and many levels including house league, select, C, A & AA.   I most recently have been an Assistant Coach on the 2024-25 U10A and U13A teams for the APMHA.

MY PROGRAM & PHILOSOPHY

My coaching philosophy is to foster a love for the game, promote development and, at the same time, instill some key life skills that are transferable outside of hockey. By focusing on skill development, teamwork and a positive approach to competition, I believe I can help players grow on and off the ice.   My goal is to help the players improve by helping them develop a strong competitive spirit that is both respectful and fun, and equip them with the skills and mindset to succeed. I am passionate about player development and creating a positive, competitive environment where these young athletes can thrive.

In addition to regular team practices and league play, we will look to participate in 3 to 4 tournaments providing the kids with a chance to bond as teammates and showcase their abilities in a competitive setting.

COACHING TEAM
I will assemble a coaching staff who have experience coaching, are passionate about the game of hockey and are committed to helping all players improve. I aim to work cohesively with the staff to ensure we provide clear age appropriate instruction and give plenty of positive reinforcement.  Practice plans that focus on fundamental hockey skills such as skating, puck control, passing, shooting all the while emphasizing hockey IQ including positioning, decision making and anticipation of the play.

ICE TIME

Last season, we had access to over 110 hours of ice time, with all sessions scheduled during prime-time hours to accommodate families. We are fortunate to have access to 3 facilities with 9 ice pads, providing our teams with ample ice time to run our programs effectively. Our ice times are fixed to specific days and times, providing consistency throughout the season and eliminating the uncertainty of weekly scheduling.

THE ASSOCIATION

The APR is truly the place to play. The APMHA is a forward-thinking organization with a dedicated Board of Directors and Executive Committee, all of whom are non-parent members. This structure eliminates any perceived conflicts of interest or favoritism, ensuring that every player receives equal opportunities. The APMHA is committed to the success of its players, teams, and families, providing a solid foundation of support for coaches and athletes alike. The association’s administrative staff is always available to assist parents and players throughout the season, ensuring that everyone has the resources they need to succeed.  I am proud to be part of such a dedicated and passionate hockey community.
